Oil Portrait Painting from Photographs

Instructor: Peter Sandberg

How do you create a portrait that conveys presence, personality, and depth—from a photograph?

In this course, you will work with oil portrait painting from photographic references, focusing on the essential elements that transform an accurate likeness into a compelling portrait. Spanning two weekends (four full days), the course provides ample time to deepen your technical skills while developing your personal artistic expression.

During the course, you will explore:

  • How to select and interpret a photographic reference
  • Proportions, head anatomy, and facial structure
  • Light, colour, and tonal values—creating volume and realistic skin tones in oil
  • How to avoid common pitfalls when working from photographs
  • Techniques for bringing life, character, and expression to a portrait
Teaching combines group demonstrations, lectures, and individual guidance. Each participant will work on their own portrait throughout the course and receive continuous, personalised feedback tailored to their level of experience.
